Southern Style Green Beans

Ok - Yes - Bacon and butter are used in this recipe but it would not be southern style green beans without them. So deliciously good - just enjoy!

Southern Style Green Beans


  • 4 slices bacon

  • 1 lb green beans or French Green beans, snapped and longer ones cut in half.

  • 1/2 large onion, sliced

  • 2 cups chicken broth, plus more if needed

  • 2 tsp season salt

  • 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • ¼ tp red pepper flakes (optional)

  • 1 Tbsp butter


  1. Brown and crisp bacon in a large pot. Remove bacon from pot and reserve.

  2. Add the onions and saute until just tender.

  3. Add green beans to the pot along with all remaining ingredients, except butter.

  4. Bring to a boil and the turn heat to medium low. Cover and simmer until desired tenderness. (not crunchy)

  5. Drain beans and add butter. Check seasoning and add extra salt or pepper as needed.

  6. Sprinkle with bacon and toss to distribute the butter and bacon.
